The best of 2008

I would put some mp3's up with this post but they keep getting taken down.shucks.

1)White Lies-Fully establishing themselves as the next big thing for 2009.Dark,brooding and epic live.

2)Friendly Fires-Go back 16 months or so and I would of predicted them to of just been another metronomy cast of but they have changed their sound to something more concrete and established. Its obvious to see they have grown up musically.Still brilliant to get down to on the floor.

3)Golden Silvers-My Favourite find of 2008.I dont know what it is about them but they still get me exicted everytime I listen to them.Brilliant at Latitude in the summer and even better at Birmingham Bar Academy in September. As for Gwillym Gold-style icon of the year.

4)Laura Marling-Praised by nearly everybody in 2008 and no compliants there. The album is heartbreakingly good and is the one person I was gutted to of missed live this year.

5)Bon Iver-A late late late find for this year, before I had come to university I had never heard of them/him but it is in the top 3 of my albums of the year. The best album to of been recorded in a remote cabin to date.Fact.

6)Johnny Flynn-Another highlight of Latitude this year as well as producing the most under prasied album of the year. When he played in Leeds Holy Trinity Church you could not of found a better venue or artist. Not only was it my favourite/special gig of the year it was one of my favourites of all time.A talented, talented artist who deserves more press coverage.

7)The Black Keys-This band make me wish I was born in the 70's.Sounding as raw and as funky as Hendrix they have open my eyes to a genre I thought I would never take an interest in.

8)Metronomy-Unique.Brilliant and just downright catchy.Nights out has the best the best dance record released this year.Joseph Mount has done Britain Proud.

9)Eugene Mcguiness-Another underated singer song writer this year.He sounds like nothing I have ever heard before but his voice feels like I have been listening to him for years on end.Brilliant

10)Interpol-Although not releasing an album in 2008 it was the year in which I had first seen them live and it was absolutley intense. On a sunday night in the rain it was the perfect setting for them and it made me go and get every single song I could get my hands on thereafter.

11)Lightspeed Champion-Way back in January Dev released Falling of the Lavender Bridge and it blew me away.To come from the brilliance of Test-Icicles to something so delicate and thoughtful as this album was a nice suprise and seeing him live with the Semi Finalists in Newcastle was heartwarming.

12)Wild Beasts-If you can show me a band that sound anything like this then I will place £5 into your hand. After seeing them support Maximo Park in Gloucester in the summer of 2007 they caught my attention so when Limbo Panto was released I was excited to get hold of it.It didnt dissapoint.Right from the opening of Vigil For A Fuddy Duddy you know you are in for something special.3 times missed live in 2008 thanks to seeing White Lies instead twice and then not realising they were playing my University Libary! they will be a dead cert on my to see list of 2009.

Lightspeed Champion-No Suprise For Wendella

Wild Beasts-Cheerio Chaps.Cheerio Goodbye

Last Night I Was I Thought I Was Invincible

Just a quick mention. Its taken me about 5 months to get my ass into gear and mention them

Golden Silvers.Just Wow.

Golden Silvers-Magic Touch

Its been an age...

So I lost my password and couldnt answer my secret question.great.

sometimes its almost impossible to use the internet sometimes when every two seconds you are asked for your mothers dogs first childs name as a secret question.Strange..very strange

But back to the basics..Its been a crazy old few weeks and since I last dropped my thoughts onto here and it feels like a whole new life im living now. I finally ended up going home which was amazing and probably one of the best weekends in a long long time.I travelled to Bristol to see Glasvegas be supported by what has to be the best support bill in many many gigs..The epic and uplifting White Lies and the jerky pop of Thomas Tantrum.

There are no words as to how much White Lies have changed since the last two times i witnessed them.Gone are the few flaws they had and now they have replace mediocre lighting displays to something which makes u feel like it is the end of the world. It is strange to think that I saw them in the same venue(Bristol Anson Rooms) just over a year ago supporting the maccabees as Fear of Flying. It seems like you are watching a band from another planet. The best bit about it is that they have been very careful in not letting many songs being leaked onto the net from their new album so brownie points to their management. They are also now booked onto the tasty looking NME tour with Glasvegas,Friendly Fires and Florence and the Machine.

Glasvegas on the other hand were what i expected..overly scotish...overly reliant on the lighting from the geraldine video and after a guitar pedal breaking and a long break they just lost their momentum. So no gold star for them.

It feels good to be writing again. Its nearly christmas and after a rather unsuccesful/unfun trip with Manchester..no names mentioned ahem. I am looking ahead to this weekend for the jingle all the way show at Leeds Holy Trinity Church which includes the always inspiring Jeremy Warmsley and Cats and Cats and Cats. Then its off to the Academy on the same day to witness those Maccam heroes the Futureheads reinstall why they are just that damn good..

Over and out!

p.s The Specials reforming! ohhhhhhhhh my dear god!

save yourself?

So ive decided to try again and hopefully this time not get my blogs removed without any permission..

Willy Mason..Where do i begin? It feels like another lifetime since I last listened to his tales. If it were not for one of my flatmates I think he would of been put in my musical archive forever and been lost amongst many other talents that I managed to siv through in my mid teens. However he his permantley back on my playlist and each song puts me back four or five years where I had no worries but to do homework and hangout with friends.

Listening to "Oxygen" makes you feel like you are on a long long journey that you just never want to end."Save myself" seems to be like a personal message to anyone listening that even if stuff is getting really bad then theres always hope.I really did think that Willy Mason would slowly dissapear into the distance like most singer song writers do but theres something genuine and honest about his whole persona that comforts you.Its stripped down raw emotion and thats what keeps you gripped.

Bon Iver is Justin Vernon's most current and notable band, it also contains Mike Noyce and Sean Carey. Their Debut album For Emma,Forever Ago was released in 2007 but has only just fallen into my lap. To understand the album itself without listening to it before is tough because for the first few times it feels like the album is just background music and then all of a sudden the penny drops. Its subtley beautiful and slowly creeps into your head after listening to it.The most standout songs are Skinny Love and For Emma but in my honest opinion you really need to listen to the album from start to finish to really appreciate it.

Its Festival time once again boys and girls and which one will you be venturing too?

With a huge influx of festivals over the past few years it has become more difficult to choose which one to spend your hard earned pennies on.

This year I will be venturing too....drum roll........

Latitude 2008-With the pure intention of witnessing the brilliance of former Fear of Flying boys White Lies,Oxfordshire Math Heroes Foals,Swedish Sensation Lykke Li and the new poster boy for folk singer songwriters Johnny Flynn. Not forgetting however the comedy tent with Bill Bailey and the all time hero Dave Gorman.I will also be keeping my fingers crossed for the late addition of Devante Haynes!
